I just needed to keep trying. I had missed the difference between "file name" (which wouldn't compile) and "filename" which Excel expects.

save as active sheet filename pathname file format PDF file format

I wonder why Microsoft makes some of the syntax for Word and Excel different when being consistent would be easier? I am also reminded not to use variable names like "fileName" since you never know when it can come back and bite you :-/
