Just because I was curious, I couldn't resist typing 'mdls' into Terminal, then dropping a file on it. got ...

kMDItemContentCreationDate     = 2007-06-18 18:03:28 -0500
kMDItemContentModificationDate = 2007-06-18 18:03:28 -0500
kMDItemContentType             = "public.xml"
kMDItemContentTypeTree         = (
    "public.xml",
    "public.text",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
)
kMDItemDisplayName             = "Report.xml"
...

I wonder what would happen on your Mac if you couldn't get 'choose file of type {"public.xml"}' to work?
