- Thread-topic: Consternation resulting from trying to use Apple Mail as a Gmail IMAP Client
My employer has outsourced mail services to Gmail, so, in all likelihood,
sooner or later, I will be required to adopt Gmail as my email service.
Fortunately, I'm allowed to use Apple Mail as an IMAP client with that
service. Unfortunately, I find that there is an extremely vexing tenet of
the strategy for using Gmail that can be most readily identified as the "All
Mail" folder. My frustration results from the observation that one
apparently can't move a message into the folder location of one's choosing.
Rather, one can only put what the mail server considers a marker or label
for it there, which, although recognized as the genuine item by the mail
client, has no meaningful effect regarding its actual disposition, which
depends exclusively upon its presence in the All Mail folder, and that
doesn't change unless acted upon there. If that's really the case, then, for
me at least, any benefit for having any other folders is completely
eliminated unless I can create a script for Apple Mail or some other
compatible client application that will automatically identify messages in
the All Mail folder when or after I've deleted them from other folders and
delete them from there also. I thought I might be able to get a list of
messages existing in the trash whenever they show up there and then locate
them in the All Mail folder and delete them there. I would be grateful for
suggestions about how to do that. Thanks.
