Illustrator position of selection

Hello scripters,
I hope to find any general hints on the following issue:
The process works as this:
We get specially prepared data with values for charts.
We successfully managed to create those charts by applescript but
there is one problem:
For Illustrator doesn't allow to change page dimensions on an existing
document (WHY???) and we need to open a template with graphic- and
paragraph styles to start working on,
we have to create a new file in the end that has the correct
dimensions for placing purposes of the file afterwards (special
workflow, that has no access to the art box of an illustrator file)
My intention was to duplicate all items to the new document. Either
via copying (which is ugly of course) or by duplicating.
The advantage of copy/paste is that it leaves all elements on their
layers correctly (needed feature in terms of continuing the work on
the artwork after the script ran)
The disadvantage is, that I don't see any possibility to control the
position on the page.
If I set the position of selection, the items are moved all to the
same position...
Is there any way to replicate the GUI-setting of the position of the
whole selection concerning the bounding box of it?
Or any other idea?
Any hint most appreciated!
Tia, demski
