Rather than recreate a search engine in AppleScript, why not use Spotlight
to do the heavy-lifting, just providing your own front-end (since that's
the part you don't like)? Unless something is wrong with your Spotlight
index, it'll be able to answer all the questions you've got - the problem
is just on the interface end (Mail's search interface is pretty basic).
Check out the "mdfind" shell command - lots of articles on it if you Google
"spotlight mdfind".
