Do note that xxx-xxx-xxxx is only a useful format for US telephone
numbers.  If it's at all conceivable that someone would enter an
international phone number, you should make sure your app can handle
it.  A US phone number in international notation looks like this: +1
212 555 1212  (long distance directory assistance for Manhattan), but
in general they consist of a + followed by any number of digits
intermixed with spaces.
