Today I have been doing more experimenting with Spotlight searching.
I have discovered ...

1. You can use Command-F to search an unindexed sparsebundle image disk.
(Provided, of course, that you have unchecked "Always open folders in a new
window" in Finder references. Bug?)

2. A Saved Search will ONLY find items in an indexed sparsebundle image disk.
(I don't know why.) Once you turn-off indexing and remove the index files,
the Saved Search stops returning results.

For the time being, I am going to stop any attempts to understand how to
work-around problems with Spotlight. Spotlight must be a very capable
search engine, but the User Interface is so crippled that it's useless.

I'll try again next week with Snow Leopard. Perhaps it has been fixed?
If not, I will need to write a feature request bug report.
