Luther,
The answer might lie with the way SL measures GB.
In SL 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes
In Leopard 1GB =1,073,741,824 bytes = 1024^3
That is if you have 432.6 GB in SL you would have about 404 GB in
Leopard.
So, when you are computing available space, be aware that you
might have some discrepancies like that.

I think it might be more involved than just GB vs GiB. If not, I'd
like someone to explain to me how it is that:
1) Text Edit appears as "16.3MB on disk (12,734,083 bytes)". How do
you reconcile those numbers in GB vs GiB? I can't.
It's correct.
You get two kinds of infos.
12,734,083 bytes is the count of bytes written on the HD
16.3 MB 'measures' the count of physical blocks (clusters) used on
the HD.
A package like TextEdit contains numerous files.
You may have files of a single byte. Each will use an entire physical
block.
On my machine, a physical block is a 4 Kbytes one and it may contain
a two bytes file (I made the test).
This may explain the described difference.
