open for access file

Hello there!
I'm working my way through Jerry Lee Ford's book 'AppleScript Programming for the absolute beginner'
Currently on chapter 7 on accessing Files and Folders I've copied one of his example scripts with the statement
set WorkingFile to open for access file MyFile
It compiles fine but on execution it just posts the error message 'Network file permission error.'
Unfortunately the book's author doesn't seem to be aware of this condition.
Does anyone out there know what this is about ?
Would appreciate any help!

Mike
