You mean like they do when a third-party printer doesn't work because of a
faulty driver? I know what you mean, but I'm thinking in terms of being
installed and not necessarily active.

Yes, it's not perfect. But one of the biggest barriers to third-party
additions these days is not the logistics so much as IT departments and
blanket rules about installing software.
Which gets back to the point that it's crazy that a lot of stuff is not in
the language itself, or at least in Standard Additions. String handling,
list sorting, grep S&R, and some XML handling -- nothing particularly exotic
there.
