In addition to Robert's suggestion, you can use Smile (that's a wonderful free software by Satimage-software, my company) as it implements Quartz' filters into AppleScript.

Hi everybody,
is there a way to manipulate pictures via AppleScript?
I want to lighten, darken or blur pictures an assemble them.

Any clues how I can do that?
