A Couple of Things Noticed About Mail

  • Subject: A Couple of Things Noticed About Mail

First:
Yesterday, I created a new standard user in order to test a script. The first thing I noticed was Mail going boink, boink, boink, boink ... to the point of extreme irritation. Then I remembered that I needed to turn off "Play user interface sound effects" in the Sound Prefs Pane. Problem fixed. These sounds make sense in response to some manual action by the user. But in this script ...

repeat with msg in msgList
--
if sourceFile ≠ {} then
--
-- some stuff here
--
tell application "Finder"
--
-- lots of stuff here
--
tell application "Mail"
set read status of msg to true
delete msg
end tell
end tell
end if
end repeat

they are an awful nuisance. I should not have to explain this to a user, either, but I guess I'll have to.

I have already complained about the need to open a folder window in order to 'set toolbar visible of window of ...' which slows a 'repeat' block just so I can watch the spiffy graphic animation. It's appropriate for manual actions, but not in a script.

Second:
In Leopard and Tiger, to my best recollection, when a new "On My Mac" mailbox was created in Mail, it was inserted into the mailbox list in alphabetical order. In Snow Leopard, they are inserted at the bottom of the list. I haven't found any way to alphabetize this list except to do it manually. Does anyone know more?
