Turning Off Auto-correcting In TextEdit

Hi, I'm a neophyte in my efforts to write AppleScript scripts. For a couple of months now I've been subscribed to this discussion list and lurking to see if I can learn by staring profoundly at the various scripts the members submit in their posts. If I have the application the script is written for, I try the scripts out when I can. I don't always know what to change to get them to work on my machine. I figure that will come. I wanna learn how to write scripts mostly for Mail and TextEdit. Simple stuff that probably isn't all that challenging to people with a career.

Can something be done with AppleScript or Terminal or Cocoa, or any other key to the matrix that will stop the SL version of TextEdit from automatically correcting the spelling of what I write whether I want it to or not? I can't quote people who don't or can't use good English without the spellchecker firmly interfering and changing the spelling back to the TextEdit authors' own version of reality. I opened the Preferences panel and unchecked everything I saw that might cause the problem. The checkboxes don't seem to be connected to anything. I can't even highlight stuff anymore without some ridiculous popup appearing that stops what I'm doing and limits my options even before I finish highlighting the desired section.

Verbal creativity appears to have been extinguished by the dictates of the military/industrial complex. No more new words. Making mistakes that might oddly appear mo' better than the original proposition will be auto-corrected to AppleSpeak. What a drag, man. However, the auld people have known all along it was coming to this sooner or later. "Them thar computers are ob' de Devil."

I sort of apologize for the sarcasm. Enough, at least, to appreciate any help to stop the invasion.
