If its app is a droplet, it works for me as you've described. I created the droplet in 10.6.1 then dragged and dropped it into the Places area of the sidebar. I can drag items onto it, and because mine has a run handler, I can click it, too.
I'm using Applescript Editor and don't see any way to save it as anything other than an application, bundle, script, or text. Is there some other way? Mine has a run handler as well.
The choices are: Script, Script bundle, Application and Text. If you save as an Application, you always get an "application bundle". Applescript Editor no longer saves as a non-bundle application.
