An applet becomes a droplet if it contains an open handler.
On open fileList
--do stuff
End open

If its app is a droplet, it works for me as you've described. I created the
droplet in 10.6.1 then dragged and dropped it into the Places area of the
sidebar. I can drag items onto it, and because mine has a run handler, I can
click it, too.
I'm using Applescript Editor and don't see any way to save it as anything other than an application, bundle, script, or text. Is there some other way? Mine has a run handler as well.
