They appear like that when no data is returned for a given value. In AppleScript, it really should map to 'missing value', but doesn't. A null value is not an empty string. An empty string would be show as "". I don't the technical details why XML/RPC and SOAP requests are like this. You'll need to ask one of the Chris's.
