The issue seems to have resolved itself. I no longer get the error.
I'm wondering if it may have had to do with how shortly after I
installed 10.6.1 update and logged in that I began running the script.
Perhaps the Finder has a number of extra things it needs to take care
of once the user logs in after the 10.6.1 update?
