(1) what specifier are you using for file ? I assume that it must be an alias

(2) saveable file format is pehaps what we often name Unified Type Identifier (UTI)

(1) The specifier newFileis of type file in POSIX format. As far as I know you cannot use an alias for an nonexistent file?

(2) I have looked up the UTIs and ended up with this: com.apple.quicktime-movie 

I will try that and report back.
