Is there a way to select a specific message in a mailbox

My problem:

I currently have a script that works on a selected
message (it saves the message as text and moves
it to another mailbox after marking it as read, using
GUI scripting, which requires me to select the message
by hand, one at a time).

Is there a good reason for using selected messages? In Leopard, you can get a copy of a message simply by dragging it from Mail onto (for example) your desktop. It will be an .emlx document, not .txt, but the difference is slight. (If you open it with textEdit, you will see the complete header.) An .emlx document, located anywhere, is simply a Mail document that you can open in Mail by simply double-clicking it. I do it all the time.
