It's not that they need recompiling, it's just that they should be saved as
application bundles.

It's not spelled out directly, but under "Script File Formats" it says:
"AppleScript Editor no longer supports saving applications in the old
single-file format. All scripts saved as an ³Application² will be saved as
an application bundle with three supported architectures: ppc, i386, and
x86_64. Such applications can run on Mac OS X v10.3 and later. Old
single-file applications opened in AppleScript Editor will be treated as
read-only files: you must use Save As to save them, and they will be saved
in the new format."
