Thanks, I now understand the problem. :-)
Are you still struggling with it, or did you find an explanation?
Could you check that there are no discrepancies between the actual
contents of com.apple.mail.plist, the values returned by "defaults
read com.apple.mail" and those returned from Mails's properties?
On the other hand, no forgotten cron job or launchd periodic task?
I've found no problem in com.apple.mail.plist.
I've never looked at cron or launchd. If there's something there, I
don't know about it.
I've been checking my Trash mail multiple times daily in hope of
catching the problem in the act. But ... no problem. Every morning, I
click a button that archives trash over 3 days old ... no problem there.
I haven't changed any of the Mailbox Behaviors that would cause the
preference file to be written to.
The problem first occurred on Sep 10, 11, 12. I noticed that my mail
archive contained no messages for those dates. That's when I began
watching my Trash mailbox.
On 8 June 2009, I submitted bug report 6954718 on some UI behavior
related to Mail's "Store ... on server" checkboxes. As the problem
developed, I also included the following in subsequent reports on this
bug:
1. Changes made to Mailbox Behaviors via AppleScript are not written
to Mail's preference file and are temporary.
2. Changes made to Mailbox Behaviors via Mail's Get Account Info are
not written to Mail's preference file and are temporary.
(I think these worked correctly in Tiger.) When Snow Leopard became
available, I reported that these problems had NOT been fixed. (Was a
new bug introduced?)
I'm still watching my Trash and, so far, no explanation.
