DS_Store Files

  • Subject: DS_Store Files

I open the folder startup/System/Library/CoreServices/ from time to time and I always notice that it never opens in the location on the desktop where I last left it. So, I asked, "Do the .DS_Store files, which the System folder does not contain, have anything to do with this?"

I made invisible files visible. (I have a script for this, but you can use TinkerTool.)

I created an "untitled folder" on the desktop, then created an "untitled folder" inside the first one. A new .DS_Store file will (eventually) appear in the outer folder. I copied this .DS_Store file into startup/System/Library/, then restarted. The CoreServices folder now stays where I put it, but not its sub-folders nor the Library folder.

This indicates that:
Information about a folder is contained in the .DS_Store file in the parent folder.

Now, create more new folders within the outer "untitled folder" created above. Open the .DS_Store file with TextWrangler. As you make changes to the sub-folders, you can see changes being written to the .DS_Store file. The information seems to be somewhat cryptic, but you can see lots of information about the sub-folders.

You can have hours and hours of fun with this!
