How to access raw data (as seen in chevron syntax)

I've got a PICT resource on the clipboard and I'm trying to use
AppleScript to write that data into a file. I can see the raw data
(represented within chevrons as picture:data PICT264C...) but I can
not figure out a way to actually get at those bytes.
Reading between the lines of Matt Neuburg's book, I think perhaps it
isn't possible. But I thought it was worth asking in case somebody's
figured out how to do it.
I realize I could fall back on GrophicConverter or Photoshop for this
specific task, but I'd prefer to avoid that, as I need to make this
available to a number of people. Besides, there are other types of
raw data one might need to work with.
