Although it doesn't look that way above - time zone differences - Brian's message was sent just 3 minutes after yours. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have received, or read, anyway, your message before sending his. He probably saw it the very next time he looked at AS-users list email - to whom it might have looked like an immediate reply to his question!
