I understand, I was thinking laterally that by using a Dashboard widget on the desktop this potentially widens the possible choices. There are two Calendar applications that can be used in this way:

On my MacBook, one is 1.98 cms in height, the other one in its small size, which looks like an iCal icon, is just under 3 cms. Perhaps this is still too large for your purposes..?
