Re: Filemaker and Database events
Re: Filemaker and Database events
First, I use Filemaker and I find it useful, my purpose is not to bash the application.
I do have a workflow that needs an application like Filemaker (or hypercard or FaceSpan) that can provide a flexible user interface and full access to a large and fluid database.
Everything I want to do should be easy to do in Filemaker via appleScript, but it's not.
There is no good reason to not have an import command easily accessible to appleScript. And filemaker's built in scripting via appleScript, is lame. You can activate a script, but you can't build a script on the fly, you can't send data to a script and you don't get a useful apple event result. That, plus not importing pipe delimited data, or SQL3 files, is the total of my frustration with filemaker.

Once the file file has been converted to a format that Filemaker can import, it takes seconds to import.
Getting the data into that format, which requires not a trivial bit of manipulation, takes minutes.
Even if I were to simply dump big chunks of the pipe delimited data into filemaker fields, and avoid the time consuming part of the reformatting, simply stepping and repeating through each record of these files takes minutes.
