I've got Applescript calling PHP URLs on an HTTP MAMP server across the room.

Like so:

set myURL to "http://assetserver.ebiz.mySuperAsewomeDomain.com:80/PHP/Verify-serialnumber.php?serialNumber=" & mySerial

set myresult to do shell script "curl " & myURL

set myresult to myresult as integer

It's pretty straightforwards.
