OK, I'm beginning to agree that the problem may be with the imac, or, more
likely, a problem with the OS or the Finder app installed on the imac.
It seems that your system is having problems resolving aliases in the
finder.
At this point I'd suggest trashing finder preferences (after backing up, of
course) and maybe even reinstalling Snow Leopard. Someone else suggested
using System Events instead, and that may be a good idea, but if the Finder
is having problems resolving aliases, I'd definitely want that resolved
before it turns ugly.
FYI, we know that Laine's suggestion didn't work, but your script, as
posted, shouldn't work on any system without Laine's or my suggestions.
Corcecing the string to alias should make it work on any system. Unless the
failure is new and different form, I think you've got a bad install.
