OK, I'm beginning to agree that the problem may be with the imac,
or, more
likely, a problem with the OS or the Finder app installed on the imac.
It seems that your system is having problems resolving aliases in the
finder.
At this point I'd suggest trashing finder preferences (after
backing up, of
course) and maybe even reinstalling Snow Leopard. Someone else
suggested
using System Events instead, and that may be a good idea, but if
the Finder
is having problems resolving aliases, I'd definitely want that
resolved
before it turns ugly.
FYI, we know that Laine's suggestion didn't work, but your script, as
posted, shouldn't work on any system without Laine's or my
suggestions.
Corcecing the string to alias should make it work on any system.
Unless the
failure is new and different form, I think you've got a bad install.

This make me think to reports which I got about problems with 10.6
updated to 10.6.2 thru Application Update (delta updater).
These problems were solved after applying the 10.6.2 combo updater
available from :
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl959
It would cost nothing to try to apply it.
