I think that an error about containers should read "Can't make «class
ctnr»", not "Can't make «class clnr»", so I'm trying to consider what might
be causing that kind of discrepancy.
Have you tried resetting defaults for formatting in AppleScript Editor's
preferences?
What happens if you create a new admin user and try running the same steps
while logged into that account?
I'm thinking keyboard and language settings, or fonts, but I don't have a
magic cure for that problem. If you've done some fancy finagling of those
kinds of settings, you might try undoing some of it. If you aren't in too
deep with system customization, reinstalling 10.6 might be your simplest
answer.
