Setting image data via AppleScript produces larger files

If I use AppleScript to add artwork to iTunes tracks, the file ends up being much larger than if I simply drag & drop the .jpg files to the iTunes Get Info window. iTunes must be able to store the original compressed data. The only way I've been able to get it to work with AppleScript is to convert the image to PICT, then read it "as picture" starting at byte 513. Is there any way to make it accept compressed jpg data instead? One google search said to use "as JPEG picture", but that doesn't work.
