OK, so my setup does in fact appear to be 64-bit, as one would expect with 10.6 on an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. I can compile and run 64-bit executables, which jibes with Chris's message, since I'm seeing the conversion bug.
I earlier reported that it seems to be 32-bit simply because 'uname -m' reports "i386" instead of "x86_64". I'm guessing that's another bug, in uname(3)?

So my late 2006 iMac (the last white model) is 32 bit?
