Hello
Spotlight searches the metadata that mdls provides from a database generated with an mdimporter that basically gets the metadata that mdls has access to together with the contents of the data.
If you can't search within your scripts with spotlight you should get the mdimporter from google.
In general you'll find everything you need at macscripter.net what mdls concersn.
The spotlight programming guide is very useful (at ADC ).
A program called spotlight meta data from hamsoft.com is very useful as it shows you the metadata.
There is also an old AppleScript Studio project called spotlighter which may be useful.

These links weren’t very helpful, a search on macscripter for spotlight returned 0 results and on tidbits 150 results, but it was hard to figure out which of Matt’s great articles you were referring too.
I don’t think mdls is synonymous with Spotlight, mdls lists metadata for files, spotlight finds files, but I’m missing something, right?
There is a great guide on programming spotlight (mdls) at macscripter.net <http://macscripter.net>
There is also a great article written by Matt Neuburg about spotlight on tidbits.com <http://tidbits.com>
There is also the spotlight programming guide which is rather mandatory on adc.
