You can use 

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto StartInterval -int 3600

To set the backup interval (in seconds) and other Time Machine parameters (Google will find you the documentation on that) but I prefer to use apps like TimeMachine Editor to set my schedule. Not that this really has anything to do with AS directly, but after TM saved my life on several occasions (I still use other backup schemes like SuperDuper in tandem) I like to have it working - just not every hour.
