G'day, & thanks Luther, but for technical reasons I'm trying to avoid using Printer Setup Utility to set the default printer, otherwise it would be the answer.

I've got a dilemma. I'm trying to use the 'target printer' option in a direct print script with both Graphic Converter and Excel 2011.

This may not help, but Printer Setup Utility in ./System/Library/CoreServices/ is scriptable and may do what you need.

And what, you ask, was the beginning of it all?
And it is this......
Existence that multiplied itself
For sheer delight of being
And plunged with numberless trillions of forms
So that it might
find
itself
