So the problem is not really in the script, but in making the script run over the network.

When you say does not run on 10.6, what does it do?  Silently fail?  Time out? Display an error message?

It's a stay open script, is it open at the time the command is sent?  Activating an application remotely can be problematic. I've had mixed success with telling Finder to open the app.

Can you make sure the target machine is set to receive remote apple events in the Sharing panel of System Preferences.  I know it was working before but double check, just to be sure.
