On my Mac the folder referenced above happens to have list view, but on your Mac all of the sub-folders of window 1 may have column view. At least that's what I think is happening.

I'm beginning to smell a bug, here. Changing the target of a window should never (I think) open or close a window, just change what appears in the referenced window.

I can't seem to reproduce the problem you're having. My first thought was of the Finder preference setting to "Always open folders in a new window." But it's checked (true) on my Mac, so that theory is worthless. Despite that, I wonder if this approach might make a difference on your Mac:

set {target of window 1, current view of window 1} to {alias "Work_Files:Mail-Safe Archive:_Mail-Safe Folder:2010:2:4:", column view}

Does the original window still close and a new one open for each target change?
