It's checked on mine, too. Despite that, I wonder if this approach might make a difference on your Mac:
set {target of window 1, current view of window 1} to {alias "Work_Files:Mail-Safe Archive:_Mail-Safe Folder:2010:2:4:", column view}
Does the original window still close and a new one open for each target change?
It still has the problem that first window 1 is closed, then a new window opens with the new target. Only now, the new window is in column view.
If I tried using this, the display would be really ugly. Remember, I'm trying to do this in a recursive handler. The window should show the selection moving smoothly down each column as each folder is checked.
