Thanks all for the input.

Looks like my major problem was that Smile got a wild hair and wasn't behaving. I quit it and restarted and things work better.

Maybe I'm wandering way off base here but what I'm used to having is;

With Tex-Edit Pro I create a document with lines of several items, tab separated for ease of reading, that Applescript can read with return and tab delimiting, as lines and items.

A file created with TextWrangler now works although I would like it better if I had the visual appearance of Tex-Edit Plus. Show hidden and invisibles would be nice.

I'm leaning toward TextWrangler mainly because it doesn't have all the extra baggage that I don't want.
