Yes, and that's why I started with a very simplified version of it: your script was way too complicated and just obfuscated the basic behaviors.
That said, you have made me notice that I forgot to add a note related to the "here strings" as implemented by bash.
But Mark already did it (and provided the rationale as well): the "<<<word" construct adds a newline to "word" after expansion.
So, unless I've forgotten something else (who knows?), one should now have all relevant info for correctly interpreting the results you have submitted.
