Yes, the Finder does have a problem with invisible files/folders. But, in this case, the temporary items folder is ...

which is not invisible. Only the folder "OS_X:private:" is invisible. Its contents are very visible. So, I don't think visibility is involved, here.
I don't know why opening the window of the temporary items folder makes the script work correctly, but it does. And it shouldn't. I'm thinking I should file a bug report on this and let Apple figure it out.
