Actually no, it is only thread hijacking if someone replies to one message about a completely different subject, because they couldn't be bothered just addressing a new message. Thread hijacking is a pain, because unrelated topics get thrown in together.
By contrast, what's happened here is that one thread about "gotos" lead to and overlapped with a discussion about "variable names". When it started to be a discussion only about variable names, a few of us renamed the subject as "variable names (was: gotos)". When the thread became only about Top-posting, someone changed the subject to "Top-posting (was: variable names)". Now that you're changing the discussion to thread hijacking, you probably should have changed the subject accordingly, and in this case, since there wasn't any really any overlap, it might have been best to start a whole new thread ;-)
OK, probably in the last two cases, it could be argued as being thread hijacking since the overlap with the previous topic was circumstantial.
