Here is a piece of help to do it in Smile.
1. use "image info for" to get the sizes of the original file,
2. run :
set w to make new graphic window with properties {pagewidth: the width
you got, pageheight: the height you got}
beginfigure(w)
drawimage(f, (0,0), "")
endfigure()
save w in "/what/ever/path/endingwith.pdf"

Thank you all! My results so far:
- sips looked good, but it doesn't work. This script simply returns
the two unix paths in the Script Editor, with no file written:
set my_source to "Macintosh HD:Users:ILC:Desktop:DV-110606a:2011-06-06
12-17-07_IMAGE000_102.tiff"
set my_dest to "Macintosh HD:Users:ILC:Desktop:DV-110606a:2011-06-06
12-17-07_IMAGE000_102.pdf"
do shell script "sips -s format pdf " & quoted form of POSIX path of
my_source & " --out " & quoted form of POSIX path of my_dest
- The Preview script always errors out, not recognizing that or that.
Looks like I will have to learn this drawimage command in Smile, now
that I know it is possible! :)
Thanks again,

Yes but isn't it a bit off-topic? The OP said "easiest".

I'd guess Preview + System Events can do that without any third

Hi:
I'm looking for a free and easy way to save a TIFF ( TIF ) file
to the PDF format with a new name. Image Events doesn't do it,
Automator doesn't let me control the location and filename, I
didn't see it in Smile, and ImageMagick seems to require a huge
complicated terminal installation. I'm thinking more of a simple
shell command or binary where I can do something like "tif2pdf /
folders/infile.tif /differentfolders/newnames.pdf" or similar.
Hopefully it's already in OS X somewhere, but it would be OK to
have an osaxen, binary or an app to install. It seems weird to me
that this doesn't already exist, as I read that PDF is the Mac's
display technology.
Thanks,
ilsa
