I have submitted an addendum to my original bug report (7216926, 11 Sep 2009). I was able to provide a demo script with an analysis that pin-points a problem in the Finder/System. (The Finder and AppleScript are storing column information in two distinct files. Neither reads/writes the other's file.)
I also told Apple that they are able to fix this. So, I expect it will soon be fixed.
