The last .sparsebundle I burned successfully was on 23 Oct. The next weekend, on 30 Oct, the burn failed and has not worked since. I don't think 'drutil' in 10.6.8 was updated during that week. I also tried a burn in 10.5.8 which was unsuccessful.

I have been using Disk Utility to burn .sparsebundle files to DVD with no problem at all.
Disk Utility makes no distinction between any types of disk image files, it just burns them.
This seems odd, since I think it uses 'drutil' or something similar.
'hdiutil' can also burn. I will look into using that.

I've been using my script with .sparsebundle files for many years thru version 10.6.8.
(I haven't tried burning in Lion, yet.)
