Title: Re: What do you think about Apple and Lion? - Just a survey
No I’m not happy about Lion either. OSX has always had it’s share of snafu’s or just irksome-to-me issues, but always worked really well. They’ve made dumb hardware decisions or designs, dumb software decisions. But I have refused to contemplate Windows, or try to learn programming for Windows; Objective C is tough enough some days.
My opinion of Lion is that it’s half baked, and though has good ideas, some of it was not thought through enough, or not given enough user-preference consideration (auto-save I’m talking about you). It’s completely obvious to anyone who’s done serious Applescripting for more than 5 years that documentation of changes are practically non-existant and has been so for a while. Applescript-ObjectiveC is great but again lacked sufficient Apple-developed docs and samples, us developers had to figure out most of the workarounds and submit bug reports (date/time math is a prime example).
So for me, I’m staying away from Lion as much as possible. I don’t recommend it to anyone, I don’t use it daily, it’s loaded on a completely separate drive from my real work. They should have dubbed it OS X1 (11) since it’s such a radical departure, architecturally.
What else can we do except file bug reports and feedback reports? Tell all your friends to file feedback reports too. Heck we could flood them with feedback about stuff we don’t like. Maybe now that Steve’s not the CEO, there can be a more open, and road-mapped kind of future for Apple. Product launch secrecy works for them, but maybe we can get some OS-roadmap openness down the road. It’s not our company, so we can’t influence it from the inside.
Lion’s not changing me to use Win or Linux. But it does make me cringe much more than ANY other OS release since the slightly messy OS 8 or 8.5 debacle (forget what it was, just that there was some major trouble). I’m sticking with Snow as long as I possibly can. Hope isn’t a strategy but that’s what I’m running with till 10.8 or whatever comes out. Hopefully they’ll listen to us and fix things.
