Related to your problem, this is why I like Safari in the OS 10.6.8 flavor.
Press command option L to open the downloads window. Paste in the URL for whatever. Watch it download.
Lion's moving of Downloads from the Window menu to Views angers me greatly.

I think it's correct, but (my) Safari, for the past few months, has not been able to download pdfs. I have to Print to PDF to get a copy which does not retain the source url in the meta-data.
