I don't want to persist unnecessarily, but

I don't need to know what type of data, but if there is some data on the clipboard. Doesn't matter what type.

you should mind, because your script might crash if there are images in the clipboard. If you are 110% sure that there wont be any, go ahead. But why take the risk if you can use
get the clipboard as text
or
get the Unicode text of (the clipboard as record)
(I don't quite know if these two are identical.)
