You aren't facing only the language's intricacies anymore: GUI scripting addresses the idiosyncrasies of an application (System Events) trying to provide a general framework for the (often ephemeral, depending on the targeted application's version or locale) GUI behavior of any application.
Inevitably, some trial and error is to be expected...
