My thought is that it’s always really sketchy to try to use your computer while a script is running, especially Applescripts.

Hi Will,

I must concur with Chris P. on this, though there are some exceptions. This is true especially when running scripts for Photoshop, Illustrator, the Finder, UI scripting, and anything using selections. I treat all of these with a strict "hands off" policy. The big danger is not so much that the script will "break," but that some operation will get silently skipped. I don't want any of my Photoshop files to randomly miss a necessary color correction or size change.

On the other hand, in my experience, InDesign, Excel, FileMaker, and calls to shell commands or osaxen are much more tolerant of "sharing." I've become comfortable with checking email, web browsing, or using iTunes while running scripts for these. However, I'm careful to stay away from any app while it's being scripted.

FWIW,
Stan C.
